Egypt Speaks Again With Cathedrals

There's nothing foolish about the dynamic Egypt Ali's sixth record dropping on Easter Sunday, Sunday, April 1. Cathedrals has been a highly anticipated piece of art all over social media platforms; spoken word – be it what it is – with music; with meaning; with hope. Announced back on Feb. 26, Cathedrals is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. This record comes after Egypt's Letters and Scars, that released in 2017.

A record with reality and beat is nothing less than a miracle and a “job well done.” Bringing a ridiculous amount of hype and build-up with a thumping beat from tobyMac's bassist, Todde Lawton, 'Word Play' is the proper way a spoken word record should be introduced. Providing the realness of her journey in the poem, “we keep turning and pressing,” said Egypt.

Keeping the attention with ringing bells and synths is the title track 'Cathedrals.' Taking our sin and our stripes that nailed Jesus Christ on the cross and illustrating those flaws – the flaws all of us have – into a stained glass window, representing beautifully broken pieces that come together to make a story of salvation through struggles. Keeping 'Cathedrals' close is a must to remind those who listen of who we are in Christ, a beautiful work of art. “My cathedrals are where the broken are welcome,” said Egypt in this haunting, yet hopeful track.

Other ear-catchers and eye-openers include the original 'Sometimes I Like The Silence,' and 'As I Am,' featuring Quese. The record ends beautifully with a message of grace and embrace in 'Ruins,' recalling the scars, stains and literal ruins that are now in the hands of the Beholder.

To say that Cathedrals is a relatively hopeful record is quite a strong understatement and underestimate of Egypt Ali's gift of poetry and creativity. Luckily, there is not a hint of disappointment in any sound wave of this record. As many people have found it impossible to match emotions and thoughts with a sound to create a story, Egypt has rather hit the mark. Be sure to go online to Spotify and iTunes on or after Sunday, April 1 and get this masterpiece.
